New York
New York Senate Bill S6359A introduced by Senator John C. Liu and Assembly Bill A7260A introduced by Assemblyman Ron Kim unfortunately have not been passed into law. These two bills introduced in April of 2021 would have required New York's public elementary and high schools to include Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander studies in their curriculum.
However, the fight has not stopped. Recently in 2023, Senator John C. Liu and Assemblywoman Grace Lee have introduced Senate Bill S5963A and Assembly Bill A06579A which would require their commissioner to establish Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander history and civic impact curriculum or instructions for school districts.
Assembly Bill A06579A is currently in Committee and Senate Bill S5963A has passed the Senate. It is our job to make sure A0659A gets passed by the Assembly so that both bills can head to Governor Kathy Hochul to be approved and signed into law. We must convince the New York Assembly to support A0659A so that we can finally get AANHPI studies into the New York school curriculum.
